Slum Survivors: The Documentary that put KGSA on the Map

Abdul started Kibera Girls Soccer Academy in 2006 when he realized the girls on his soccer team were without school fees, putting them at risk for early marriage, prostitution, and getting stuck in the poverty of Kibera. So with his own money, he started an informal free school. Luckily, these documentary makers found out what Abdul was doing and made this video. It starts off rather grimly telling the stories of women who struggle to feed children and battle AIDS and men who are tempted into crime or forced to work rather undesirable jobs to provide for their families. But then the video ends on a positive note, telling the story of Abdul and KGSA. Abdul now refers to this video as the beginning of our international attention. Since this documentary, international NGOs have made relationships with the school and generous donors have helped us build the facilities we work in today. Many students like me have come to work at the school, bringing grant money and ideas for how to give these girls a better future. Hopefully our international attention continues to grow to help us complete our facility, pay our teachers, improve the quality of the education we offer and give girls opportunities after graduation.
